What is stitchdown construction?
Stitchdown construction
In stitchdown construction the upper is flared outward and stitched directly down to the midsole or outsole, often in a double or triple row. It is simple, sturdy and flexible — common in casual shoes, kids’ shoes, moccasins and rugged outdoor boots.
Instead of tucking the upper under the last, stitchdown turns it outward and sews it to the sole platform, giving a strong joint and a visible stitch line.
It is robust, repairable and characterful, which is why it appears on casual, children’s and rugged outdoor footwear.
DOING runs stitchdown styles where a sturdy look is wanted and tests seam and bond strength on the finished shoe.
