What is TPU in footwear?
TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane)
TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) is a tough, abrasion-resistant material used for outsoles, stability plates, films and overlays. It is harder-wearing than EVA or TPR and keeps its shape under load, which makes it ideal for support elements and durable soles.
TPU offers high abrasion resistance, strength and elasticity. As a film or overlay it reinforces uppers; as a plate it adds torsional stability; as an outsole it resists wear.
It is heavier and costlier than EVA/TPR, so it is used where durability and support justify it — stability shoes, hiking, safety and premium sneakers.
DOING uses TPU for stability cages, overlays and hard-wearing outsoles and tests abrasion and bond strength on finished shoes.
